Plants do not get lice. What is commonly referred to as "black lice" in the Cayman Islands is actually sooty mold which is a dark colored fungus that grows on honeydew excreted by piercing sucking insects or on substances exuded from leaves of certain plants. It does not draw any sap directly from their host plants and as such, it is not truly a disease but instead it is a saprophytic fungus that is usually dark coloured and powdery-like hence the name sooty mold. There are several genera of the sooty mold fungi and the more common ones are Capnodium Cladosporium, Euantennaria, Scorias and Trichomerium.
