Livestock Development Officer

The post holder is to provide technical and agribusiness support to the local livestock farming community and other relevant stakeholders in an effort to improve decision-making surrounding livestock productivity and profitability, and the support the development and implementation of strategies and programmes for the growth and development of the livestock sector in the Cayman Islands.

 

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

At a minimum a Bachelors of Science Degree in Animal Production, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine or related field,

A post graduate degree in animal production, animal science, agricultural economics. Agribusiness, Agricultural Extension or a related field preferred

 

Minimum of five (5) years’ professional work experience in providing extension services and agribusiness advice to livestock farmers.

Must have at least three (3) years’ experience in the delivery of agriculture-related training initiatives for farmers and/or other members of the Agri sector.

Must have at least 3 years’ experience in artificial insemination and embryo transfer of cattle.

Experience in the development and execution of livestock development projects and plans

 

Must have sound working knowledge of, and practical experience in livestock animal health, welfare, management, nutrition, breeding, disease control, and general husbandry. Knowledge should be particularly sound with respect to cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and poultry.

Must be familiar with island geography and be comfortable with visiting locations throughout the island.

Basic working knowledge of beekeeping/apiculture principles.

Must have a passion for educating others and sharing knowledge for the purpose of continuous improvement.

The Department of Agriculture is seeking a dedicated Stockman to join our Veterinary Services team!

The postholder is to conduct good husbandry practices and assist with maintaining the health associated with the maintenance and protection of livestock and horses at the Department of Agriculture compound.

The postholder will carry out the humane slaughter of livestock under the direct supervision of the Senior Slaughter-man and under the guidelines and procedures manual for the humane slaughter of animals.

 

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

High school graduate

3 years minimum experience in Agriculture

3 years minimum experience working with and handling livestock, particularly cattle and goats

Group 4 level Cayman Islands Driver’s License

Familiarity with the signs of good health and ill-health in livestock

Computer literacy is a must
