Hurricane Preparedness – Shelters, Homes, Pastures, Pesticides, Fertilisers, Farm Building

During Hurricane season the Department of Agriculture is asking all farmers and homeowners to secure water tanks, shade houses, farm buildings, pesticides, insecticides and fertilisers safely and correctly.

Water tanks for irrigation or water usage – should be tied down, and stored if empty, or filled with water to prevent them from being damaged or blown away.

Shade houses – remove screens and plastic from shade houses to prevent damage and tears.

Farm buildings and around the house – secure loose boards, roofing materials, small items, empty pots, etc. from becoming dangerous projectiles during a hurricane.

Pesticides, Insecticides, and Fertilisers – these items should be packed in water-proof containers off the ground to prevent them from getting wet and contaminated.

Pastures – Remove, store and/or secure animal feed, watering troughs (i.e. half drums, bathtubs, etc.) during Hurricane season to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles in the area. Use heavy rocks and waterproof containers to prevent damage to feed and items being blown away.

Inspect fence posts to ensure they are properly anchored in the ground and add new or extra wire around fence premises or remove loose fencing materials entirely.
