Fear-Free Livestock Handling Notice

Fear-Free Livestock Handling: Why It Matters

The way animals are caught, handled, and transported before slaughter directly impacts meat quality and consumer satisfaction.

👉 Farmers, here are key practices for stress-free handling:
• Use well-constructed pens and gates for quick, safe loading
• Avoid hot rods, sticks, or prods that cause pain or stress
• Transport animals directly to the abattoir without unnecessary stops
• Move livestock during cooler times of day (especially swine)
• Properly train and supervise new or inexperienced workers
• Ensure trailers are ventilated, safe, and equipped with non-slip flooring
• Handle animals calmly — no excessive shouting

⚠️ Stressful handling may not show right away, but it can result in:
• Meat bruising
• Poor tenderness and taste (dark, firm & dry OR pale, soft & watery)
• Elevated cortisol that affects flavour
• Injuries that could lead to rejection at inspection

Stress-free handling = safer animals, better quality meat, and satisfied consumers
