The Red Poll Nucleus Breeding Herd plays a vital role in improving local livestock genetics, supporting the long-term sustainability and productivity of the Cayman Islands’ cattle industry. Through this programme, the Department continues to strengthen the quality of breeding stock available to farmers and enhance food security across the islands.
A dedicated team—comprising Veterinary Officers, the Senior Veterinary Officer, Stockmen and Farm Labourers, and the Farm Superintendent—continues to provide daily care and close monitoring of the herd. This includes maintaining proper nutrition, ensuring regular veterinary check-ups, and carrying out essential health and vaccination protocols.
Director of Agriculture, Wilbur Welcome, commended the team’s efforts, stating:
“These new additions represent the continued progress of our livestock development initiatives. The Red Poll Nucleus Breeding Herd is an investment in the future of Cayman’s Agricultural industry, ensuring that our farmers have access to strong, healthy, and locally adapted breeding stock.”
The Department extends appreciation to all who continue to contribute to the programme’s success and to the Ministry of Planning, Lands, Agriculture, Housing, and Infrastructure, for its continued support. Together, these efforts underscore the Government’s commitment to advancing the Cayman Islands’ livestock sector and promoting agricultural sustainability.
