HORTICULTURAL ASSISTANT
Salary Range: CI$30,312 – $39,780 per annum

The post holder is required to carry out a wide range of tasks at the Department of Agriculture’s nursery and the crop production activities area, involving the cultivation, growing, harvesting and maintenance of plants at the Department of Agriculture’s nursery and experimental station, office complex as well as duties relating to tree crop husbandry and plant propagation.

The post holder is responsible for assisting with the production and distribution of approximately 100,000 vegetable seedlings /herbs plantlets annually.

The post covers a wide range of duties relating to the following:

  • Propagation of herbs, vegetable seedlings for sale to farming community
  • Assist with potting of seedlings and fruit trees, herbs etc. at the DOA nursery
  • Aesthetic maintenance the grounds at the Agricultural complex.
  • Pest and disease management at the DOA nursery
  • Assist with maintaining the DOA orchard

KNOWLEDGE – High school graduate or equivalent with knowledge of agriculture.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – Must have at least three (3) years practical experience in nursery/farm work experience including plant propagation, establishment and care of tree crops, bananas and vegetables.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS – Applicants must have tolerance for working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and exposure to the sun and biting insects. Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.

PLANT PROTECTION OFFICER
Salary Range: CI$73,416 – $96,336 per annum
Manage and Coordinate the Department’s regulatory programs to prevent the entry and spread of plant pests.
LOCATION: GRAND CAYMAN

ORGANIZATION: MINISTRY OF PLANNING, AGRICULTURE, HOUSING AND INFRASTRUCTURE   REQUISITION ID: 2024-228   JOB TYPE: FULL-TIME   CLOSING DATE: 01-MAY-2024

 

The post holder is required to manage and co-ordinate the Department of Agriculture’s regulatory programs to prevent the entry, establishment and spread of plant pests and diseases in the Cayman Islands; Provide technical guidance to the Agronomy unit and farmers operating in the Cayman Islands, conduct pest detection surveys, manage the laboratory and process and maintain samples for diagnostic evaluation and conduct field research trials in entomology and plant pathology. Undertake responsibility for Pesticide “registration” and related research.

The post holder should be able to perform his/her duties with a high degree of independence and minimal supervision.

Good oral and written communication skills as well as a high degree of computer literacy is also required.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – M.Sc. in Plant Protection, Entomology or Plant Pathology with 3 years experience, or B.Sc. in Agriculture/Science with at least 7-10 years experience in a plant related discipline (Plant Protection, Entomology or Plant Pathology). Competency and experience in conducting Pest Risk Assessments (PRA’s).
