PROTECT YOUR PETS FROM NEW WORLD SCREWWORM
New World Screwworm (NWS) is a serious parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae that feed on living tissue. Dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals can be affected. There is currently an ongoing outbreak of NWS in the United States, however, currently the Cayman Islands remains free of NWS. Nonetheless, we must take steps to prevent entry and remain prepared.
Signs to Watch For
Seek veterinary attention from your private veterinarian immediately if your pet has:
- A wound that is getting larger instead of healing
- Maggots visible in a wound
- A foul smell coming from a wound
- Excessively licking, scratching, or biting at sight of injury
- Swelling around a wound
- Pain, discomfort, or unusual behaviour
- Loss of appetite or lethargy
How to Protect Your Pet
- Check your pet daily for cuts, scratches, or wounds.
- Keep wounds clean and protected.
- Follow your veterinarian’s instructions after surgery.
- Maintain regular parasite and fly control measures.
- Prevent pets from roaming in areas where injured or dead animals may be present.
- Seek veterinary care immediately if a wound appears abnormal.
Why Early Treatment Matters
New World Screwworm larvae can rapidly destroy healthy tissue. Delayed treatment may result in severe infection, extensive tissue damage, or further severe problems.
What To Do If You Suspect Screwworm
- Do not attempt to treat the wound yourself.
- Contact your private veterinarian immediately.
- Keep your pet isolated from other animals.
- Follow all guidance provided by the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture.
Early detection and rapid veterinary treatment greatly improve outcomes.
